Innovation Award 2023, entry 09-1061

Dear Jury, please find attached the digital attachments for entry 09-1061, KAOS ReKlapp Recyclable Highchair.

The Technical Innovation of ReKlapp

ReKlapp high chair is the most technologically advanced plastic project our eminent engineer has ever worked on, in his 30 year long career. The technology is not new, but the combination of technology and material on the front legs and steps is unique: Recycled plastic combined with wood fiber, timed sequential injection at 5 points and then gas injection to distribute the material into a tube shape.

If you lift the chair, you will see how light it is. The rib structure and tube shape give strength exactly where it is needed with a minimum of material, weight and co2 footprint.

At the end of life, all parts can be easily separated for recycling. We might have been able to patent this concept, but it is not the KAOS style. Things that help save the planet should be available to everyone who wants to help.

KAOS will keep leading the way for a better tomorrow for future generations.

The environmental performance of the material we use

The recycled PP material used for ReKlapp is significantly lowering the carbon footprint of products and contributing to the fight against climate change. Replacing virgin plastic will not only help reach our company’s sustainability goals, it also contributes to several key UN Sustainable Development Goals. Due to traceability of the material and items, each ReKlapp high chair can be recycled 9 times, allowing an estimated product lifespan of 225 years.

43% lower Overall Climate Change

The overall climate change impact of ReKlapp material is 43% lower, compared to virgin plastic.

The climate change impact includes the generation of anthropogenic (i.e. caused by human) greenhouse gases that lead to large-scale shifts in weather patterns.

94% lower Fossil Resource Depletion

The fossil resource depletion impact of ReKlapp material is remarkably 94% lower than that of virgin granulates. ReKlapp will contribute to save valuable non-renewable resources and contribute to the UN’s Responsible Consumption and Production SDG.

Fossil resource depletion describes the consumption of non-renewable, fossil resources that cannot be renewed by natural means.

73% lower Acidification

The acidification impact of ReKlapp material is 73% lower than that of virgin granulates. ReKlapp contributes to reduce the acidification of the environment, helping to protect biodiversity and contributing to the UN’s Life Below Water SDG.

The acidification impact describes the generation of emissions that contribute to acidification of soil and water by decreasing the pH of the natural environment.

82 % lower Particulate Matter

The particulate matter impact of ReKlapp material is 82% lower than that of virgin granulates. ReKlapp can help people live healthier lives in urban areas and contribute to the UN’s Good Health and Well-being SDG.

Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. Particles less than 2.5 micrometers pose a threat to human health as they can get deep into the lungs or even into the bloodstream.

92% lower Water Scarcity

The water scarcity footprint impact of ReKlapp material is 92% lower, and only a fraction of virgin granulates’ impact. ReKlapp will contribute to reduce waste, help save precious water resources and contribute to the UN’s Clean Water and Sanitation SDG.

Water scarcity footprint is based on the consumption of water resources in relation to regional water availability.

Our Partners

We are proud to work with world leading partners to make ReKlapp come to life.

Fortum provides us with qualified material, and help secure the circularity of the product. The material is sourced from Finland.

Wicro is our eminent manufacturer that is now ready to ramp up production of ReKlapp. The production takes place in the Netherlands.

Wicro

“To make a highchair completely out of recycled plastic material which complies with the safety standards is already an achievement itself.  If you combine a well thought trough design and recycled post-consumer material with complex moulds, wood fibers and gas assistant injection moulding you’ll get the ReKlapp chair of KAOS!

By closing the material loop by taken back the products after use at the consumer this is a future proof concept. We are very pleased to work on such a project where everything comes together!”

– Evert Van Damme, Project Manager, Wicro

“We were thrilled to partner with KAOS in developing the recycled plastic material for the ReKlapp highchair. This is the first Fortum Circo® application to receive approval for the highly demanding EN 71-3 standard. It demonstrates the safety and versatility of the Fortum Circo material and proves that there is no clash between a premium brand and a recycled material. On the contrary, consumers looking for high-quality brand products are often environmentally conscious and show increasing interest in sustainable brands. This product will deliver on both!
